Announcements

Next week, 2/11, our speaker will be gemologist, Alison LaBaron to talk about diamonds, stones and jewelry.

A special day for James Lindsay as he received his Rotarian of the Month pin, a thank you gift for planning the train trip to Reno AND his blue badge! The gift was a travel planning book for bucket list locations. Sounds like Carolyn is hoping he'll plan another trip for our club!

Mark your calendar for the Foundation Dinner on Thursday, April 3 at the Holiday Inn. Thanks to Steve Snyder for setting it up.

Jeff Spoor is circulating a Demotion Dinner signup.

Dan Gustavson says it is dumping snow right now up at the summit. Perfect timing for the February 28 ski and snow play day (X-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow man building). Meet behind Raleys at 7:30 AM to carpool. Let he or Bridget know if you're planning to go.

The next golf tournament will be April 5th. Scramble format with 60 player-max. Fun and prizes! Sign up will circulate soon.

Nick Willick didn't make it to the meeting because he was still working at the Carnegie Library. No work party needed tomorrow as it is close to completion.

Geoff Davis says the tour of the recycling facility on on February 25 is filling up fast.

Catherine McGregor invites us all to be a part of planning the next Rotary BBQ. First meeting will be next Wednesday at 5 PM at Canyon View Center.

Liza Stefani says the Hogs for the Hungry project needs Rotarians to sign up. Five mentor positions to support the kids raising the pigs through check ins and a direct connection to Rotary. You don’t need to know anything about pigs. Linda Maeding is the first volunteer but there's a need for more. Help is also needed to pick up and transfer feed. It is also time for Rotarians to help with the student presentation day. Liza will have more details next week.

Steve Grundmeier announced the next blood drive will be on March 5 at Canyon View. Let's take less than an hour to save many lives.

Geoff Davis had a very special presentation to award Miguel Hernandez as the Employee of the Year. This annual award goes to Miguel for his outstanding work, for going above and beyond for his clients and crew, and for contributing greatly to the community. Miguel works tirelessly on club projects like the Carnegie Library and This Old House.

Welcome to our newest member Brenda Pollacci, sponsored by Brian Mishler. Inducted by Past President, Linda Maeding, we learned that Brenda is originally from Vancouver BC, moved to Monterey where she met her then-husband and raised 3 kids. They owned and operated two businesses. Recently she moved to Auburn with daughter and grandchildren. Brenda likes to cook and bake, hike, and meet new people. Be sure to introduce yourself to Brenda at our next meeting.

Jessie Petrilla shared with us his background as a prelude to receiving his blue badge today. He went to Cal State Fullerton, served on the city council of Rancho Santa Margarita, joined the army and served in Afghanistan, and started his own company creating wire clips for cell towers. He has 2 kids and has built a forever home near the fairgrounds. Jesse grew up in Auburn, lived in a car for a while, no father in his life, in and out of trouble and landed in juvenile hall. There a woman gave him a bible which changed him. He moved back 20 years later and ended up meeting the woman that had given him the bible. Her name is Pam Harley and she still brings bibles to juvenile hall. It is an inspiring story with much more to it than is described here. Ask Jesse to share it with you.

The pot was up to $2336! Stunningly the black marble was not pulled. Next week there will only be two marbles left!

Program

Bart O’Brien was reading the December Rotary magazine and saw an article about Rotarian Anahita Dalmia. He texted Steve Grundmeier right away to invite her to speak. Anahita is a USC graduate and the youngest member of the Newport Beach Rotary Club.
Anahita is a third generation Rotarian after her grandfather and mother. She was a Rotary baby as her mom took her to all her Rotary activities. "Service above self" was ingrained in her from her childhood. Rotary is the wind beneath her wings. Anahita became an entrepreneur at age 16. Her mom told her if you want to make a difference you go to Rotary clubs. Rotarians are powerful agents of change across the world.
Eradicating polio has been a crusade for Rotary, and we are so close to the finish line. The gravity of taking out an entire disease! Anahita saw a headline stating that more polio cases were now caused by the vaccine than the wild virus. Is this the truth? No. She had two key realizations. Misinformation causes good people to make bad decisions. And that could hinder progress toward Rotary’s goals. This especially came to light during the pandemic. Everyone was interacting through their computer screens. People felt helpless yet their actions meant more than ever before. This had a strong effect in how we communicate and the impact of not knowing what to trust in what we read. Anahita developed a game to help students learn to assess information and investigate to determine the accuracy of what they are reading. Her company has created a toolkit for empowering students to become agents of change. Her goal is to get the program into classrooms across the world with the help of Rotary clubs. To learn more how you can support this initiative, contact Anahita at anahitadalmia@gmail.com.
Anahita has been designing interactive experiences for social impact since high school and is a three-time published author. Her writing centers on achieving social impact using experiential design, featuring work in publications such as Carnegie Mellon University's Well Played Journal. As a speaker, she has been featured in multiple outlets, including ThriveGlobal's "Dreamers" and the "Future of Games" series. She is also an associate faculty member at the Media Education Lab and on the Board of Advisors for The Game Academy and UC Riverside's Design Thinking Program.
Here is a video that further explains the purpose of Agents of Influence (December issue of Rotary Magazine). https://youtu.be/uW_yn7VBT1Y?si=cMA6pJN6GJCmCOUZhttps://youtu.be/uW_yn7VBT1Y?si=cMA6pJN6GJCmCOUZ
